The Sweetest Mistake: ‘No BS Best Apple Crisp’ Recipe
It's at this time every year that I am lucky enough to receive an abundance of produce from my Dad. He spent a full week taking apples off his apple tree, which we believe is a U of M variety called Minnesota State Fair. This year, the tree didn't produce half of last year's apples, but we still had probably a good 300-400 apples.
You know what I do when I have apples! It's recipe time. Apple Crisp is one of Dad's favorites, so last weekend, I made three trays of apple crisp, and this time I was missing an ingredient, but that missing ingredient actually created one of my favorite Apple Crisp recipes ever. I'd like to share it with you.
WHERE'S THE BROWN SUGAR?
Typically, I use brown sugar in my apple crisp. But after I had cut up three bags of apples and had them ready to use, I quickly realized that I didn't have even a 1/2 a bag of brown sugar in my cupboards. At first, I thought this would make my usual recipe a bomb, but it turned out to be my favorite recipe ever.

DIRECTIONS
- Peel and chop apples into slices or chunks. I prefer to peel these apples simply because they are fresh from the farm, but sometimes they have physical blemishes, so I think a peeled apple is best.
- Put chopped apples in a pan. I know that I should give you a physical measurement for how many sliced or chunked apples you should put in your pan, but honestly, I take a cake pan, and make sure the bottom of the pan is completely covered in apples. I don't spray the pan or coat the apples in sugar, because these apples are sweet enough without additional sugar at this point. Just dump your prepared apples in your pan, and as long as the bottom is completely covered, you're good to go.
- Next, melt your 1/2 cup of butter.
- Combine your white sugar, flour, oats, salt, and cinnamon in a bowl. Once it's all mixed, add your melted butter and continue to mix until you create a crumble. I use my hands to do this.
- Gently spread the crumble mix over the apples generously, covering them evenly.
BAKE TIME
- I put it in the oven for 40 minutes...and then, after checking, add additional time until the top of your crisp is a golden brown.
- Remove from oven and cool or serve hot with your favorite ice cream.
- Vanilla or Cinnamon Ice cream is a great combination.
So no BS here! You don't need brown sugar to make a delicate, sweet, delicious crisp for your family and friends. ENJOY and share my 'No BS Apple Crisp' recipe with your friends.
