Believe it or not, your body can burn calories all by itself, as long as we don't get in its way. Our body takes the food we eat and turns it into energy to keep our organs and muscles working. There are ways to speed up your metabolism, but there are also things we do that slow it down. Avoid this list of no no's to stay on the right metabolism track.

EAT AT THE SAME TIMES EVERY DAY

Eating at the same time everyday trains the body to burn more calories between meals. Even if you're eating high fat foods, if you're eating them on a regular schedule, you will more likely burn those calories if you stick to a schedule rather than eating at random times throughout the day.

STAY AWAY FROM TOXINS

Chemicals in pesticides that are found in many fruits and vegetables today, can also interfere with your body's ability to lose weight. Researchers found that dieters who ate the most toxins experienced a BIG dip in metabolism.  The best way to avoid toxins is to choose organic versions of fruits and vegetables. Make sure you get the organic versions of the dirty dozen, including apples, strawberries, grapes, celery, peaches , spinach, sweet bell peppers, imported nectarines, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, imported snap peas, potatoes, leafy greens and hot peppers.

NOT GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP

Being sleep deprived messes you up in so many ways!  The less you sleep today, the less you'll move tomorrow.  Not getting enough sleep also reduces the amount of energy your body will use at rest. So it's a good idea to go to bed at a set time everyday, to makes sure you feel your best.

NOT EATING ENOUGH

When you don't eat enough calories, your body switches into starvation mode, slowing your metabolism to conserve energy.  so eat!

SITTING AROUND

This freaks me out. According to an Ergonomic Research Manager for Ergotron, Carrie Schmitz, it only takes 20 minutes in any fixed position to inhibit your metabolism. So if your job requires sitting for long hours, see if you can figure out a way to jump up before the 20 minute mark, and move around a little.

GET MORE CALCIUM

It surprised me to find out that Calcium plays a key role in regulating your fat metabolism, which then determines whether you burn calories or store them as fat! Yikes!  A diet that is high in calcium could help you burn more fat.  So drink your milk, or start thinking about getting calcium supplements.
