ST. JOSEPH -- St. Joseph has committed $6,000,000 to the new community center project.

At the city council meeting Monday night, the city took the required step to ensure the project moves forward.

City Administrator Judy Weyrens says this decision was a long time coming.

"When we first started this project someone said they've been talking about it [community center] since 1977, and that's probably true, so I think for a lot of people it's very exciting, but I think everyone knows there's a lot of work to be done and a lot of donations needed"

The total budget will be $12,000,000, half of that raised by donations. A half-cent sales tax covers the city's current commitment.

Community groups have 2 years to raise the required $6,000,000.

The new community center will have a few different memorials to Jacob Wetterling, and three gyms. The city still needs to pick an architect and construction manager.
