What Is Dirty Soda? The Latest Trend In The Mall Of America

Last weekend saw a first for the Mall of America. Kinda tough to do at this point, seeing as the MOA has been open now for 33 years, but it was indeed a first for the larger-than-life mall. So, how did the Mall of America get 'dirty'?

The Mall of America welcomed its 1st 'Dirty' Soda biz

The Mall of America welcomed its first client that sold dirty sodas last weekend. Macarons by Maddie Lu, which previously had a space inside the MOA, reopened last Friday, and with the business's second coming, it brought with it a dirty soda bar.

In another social media post by Something Sweet by Maddie Lu - Coon Rapids, it announced that it would indeed be the first dirty soda shop inside the 33 year old mall.

"We will also be the FIRST store in the Mall of America to feature the ever so trending Dirty Sodas! 10+ flavors of creamy, cold, sodaliscious beverages! What will all of the soda names be? From my Great Grandma Agnes and Great Grandpa Bill, to my mom’s first childhood dog Baron, you’ll get to meet our family from the 1900’s!

Located on the 3rd floor right next to Nordstrom Rack, you’ll be able to quench your thirst and satisfy your sweet tooth all at once!"

What is 'dirty' soda?

Thanks to TikTok, back in 2022 the trend of 'dirty' soda began, but what exactly is a 'dirty' soda? Well it is a combination of "fountain sodas spiked with cream, flavored syrups, and other add-ins" according to Eater.com. But the trend of 'dirty' soda didn't start in 2022.

Utah is the state we can thank for the interesting beverage. The 'dirty' soda, which is a play on the Italian soda, where the Italian soda's use carbonated soda water and syrups to make drinks, the Utah version substitutes the carbonated soda water for pop like Sprite or Pepsi, and sees that get mixed with other things like creamers and other flavored syrups.

Don't forget the Macarons!

Of course, the shop, named Macaron's by Maddie Lu, will also be selling other baked goods, in addition to the 'dirty' sodas.

The Mall of America isn't done adding new stores

You can check out the MOA website, but it appears that in addition to Macaron's by Maddie Lu, there will soon be an NBA Store and a New Balance store opening up inside.
