Did Anyone Else Catch The Thanksgiving Coffee Wars?
My older son is a picky eater that learned an important lesson on Thanksgiving. After refusing to eat turkey at grandma's he figured he'd get McDonald's or some other fast food. Surprise! Everything was closed... well, almost everything.
We traveled down Highway 95 toward North Branch on Turkey Day and, as expected, most stores and businesses were closed. Wal-Mart, Menard's, Culver's, GameStop... all closed.
WHICH STORES ARE OPEN FOR THANKSGIVING
Of course most gas stations appeared to be open, which seems to be the case most years. (I will ask, however, if we need EVERY gas station open all day... could they rotate?) There was another type of business open on Thanksgiving, though, and it was one I wouldn't have necessarily guessed.
Coffee shops were almost all open on Thanksgiving. We got a coffee at Caribou in Columbus, Minnesota on Thanksgiving morning (their sign said 'open 7-1'), then on the way home in the early evening we saw that most of the shops were STILL open. Starbucks, Caribou and even a couple Scooter's locations seemed to be all systems go for the holiday.
SHOULD STORES BE OPEN ON HOLIDAYS
As someone who used to work at restaurants and gas stations I don't think businesses should force anyone to work on a major holiday like Thanksgiving. For me, who obviously has no idea what it is like to run a business, if a company has enough people who want to, or are willing to, work on the holiday, they open. If not, it should be a day off for everyone!
