Take your Mom Fishing For Free on Mother’s Day
Usually the fishing opener falls on Mother's Day weekend. Not this year. Which I think is good, because not every mom wants to be involved in a fishing opener, but if the rest of the family does, that takes them away from Mom. Unless, of course, that is giving mom a gift. Kidding... sort of.
This year, the fishing opener, which includes the opener for walleye, trout, northern pike and bass, falls the weekend after Mother's Day. Why is this? Well, Minnesota law states that the fishing opener must happen two weeks before the Saturday of Memorial Day. And this year Memorial Day weekend falls on the last weekend of May, the latest it can possibly be.
But, if Mom likes to go fishing, you can still take her fishing for free, meaning she doesn't need a license on Mother's Day weekend. And even though the official opener hasn't happened yet, you can still fish for other species such as crappies, sunnies, or some of the other possibly less desirable fish like bullheads.
Mother's Day is May 9th. The fishing opener is May 15th.
There are also a few places around the area that you can take Mom out for brunch. And they are all great choices. The key is, to make sure that Mom knows she's appreciated. Might even be a good idea to make her a great breakfast or dinner that she will appreciate from her family.
Whatever you do... Mother's Day is coming up- plan accordingly.
