It's about time to stop making the 'Cinderella' comparisons to the Rocori football team.  Simply put, Cinderella NEVER looked this good!

The improbable dream run to a state championship continues for the Rocori Spartans, who last night impressively defeated the defending state runner-ups, the Rogers Royals.  The Royals were thought to be one of the favorites in the 4A bracket, but they were no match for the Spartans, who shut them out for the first three quarters.

All you need to know about how good the Rocori defense was last night, is this fact - Rogers' biggest offensive play of the night, was a fake punt in the 1st quarter that went for 35 yards.  After that, they really didn't get a sniff.  The Rocori defense gave up six points to a team that averaged 32 points per game.  That's playing your butt off!

Meanwhile, the Spartans offense scored first, on a ten yard touchdown pass from Nate Meyer to Sean Terres, putting the Spartans up 7-0 at halftime.  Meyer added a TD run late in the 3rd quarter to extend the Spartans lead to, 14-0.

Rogers scored a touchdown early in the 4th quarter, but the extra point was blocked, making it 14-6.  But then, on what may have been the biggest drive of the entire year for the Spartans offense, Rocori answered the Royals TD with a 24 yard Christian Pedroza field goal - making the score 17-6 with 3:58 to play, and effectively putting the game out of reach.

The Spartans players, coaches, students, parents, and faculty, all rushed the field when the game was over, and quite the celebration ensued!

I was privileged to be right in the middle of it!

The Spartans will now play the winner of the Faribault/Hill-Murray game - and that will be a state semi-final game, from the Metrodome, Saturday November 19 at 12:45pm.  The game can be heard on our sister station, AM 1240 WJON.

Congratulations to the Spartans - we are all proud of you, and 100% behind you - now bring that state championship home to Cold Spring!
