When it comes to home security in 2024, you never can be too careful. Our home has locks, deadbolts, cameras and even a security system. On top of all that, there is one home safety device that makes me fell safer than all of those listed above.

Tested and reliable since the beginning of time, the good old sawed-off wooden hockey stick guards all of our ground-level doors and windows (on top of the other locks and things). I just don't see how anyone could get past it? You can pick a lock and/or maybe sneak past a camera, but how can you make the door move past that wonderful, vintage Sher-Wood hockey stick?

Other, less hockey-loving states are known to use a wooden rod, or dowel, to block sliding doors and windows. The website "Charles and Hudson" recommends this method, which they say costs only about $2.

Cut a wood dowel to the size of the exposed window track when it’s closed and always keep the dowel in place to secure the window. Even if the window or sliding glass door isn’t locked, this simple security trick will make the window or door unmovable.

We've all either got some old wooden hockey sticks lingering in the garage from the last time we went out and played or, if not, we probably know someone who does. Why not give yourself some extra piece of mind by using that extra piece of wood.
