If you own a snowmobile, ATV, side-by-side, or trike and need to relicense it for 2025, you better act fast. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will implement a new licensing system in February.

I recently got a postcard from the MNDNR to renew one of our ATVs. On the postcard was a note about the new license system and an ask to get your registration in now, or you'll have to wait until March, as they won't be processing registration renewals during the installation of the new system.

I don't know about you, but whenever I hear about a new licensing system, I can't help but think about the chaos that ensued when the Minnesota driver's licensing system was changed. I can only hope we aren't going to see that again.

The update is expected to be done by March 4th, but as with all things in life, there might be a hiccup or a delay so make sure you check back with the DNR if you do wait, to register your OHV.

What are they changing?

According to the Minnesota DNR website, the changes are to make the website more mobile-friendly for registering your OHV or getting tags for hunting.

The DNR plans to launch a new electronic license system, which will include a mobile phone app, in spring 2025.

The ELS is the primary system that issues angling and hunting licenses and permits to residents of Minnesota and other states. It also registers and titles outdoor recreation equipment, including watercraft and off-highway vehicles.

The new, modern system will make it easier for customers to buy licenses, register their harvests, and sign up for safety training. It also will improve the business process for agents, registrars, and DNR staff.

Need To Still Register?

There are a few ways you can still get your off-highway toys registered, you can go online using the DNR website, here, and you can also renew in person at any deputy registrar's office like you do to get tabs, or send in your postcard by mail with a check.

What do you need to know for OHV or fishing, hunting, and trapping in early 2025?

The MN DNR website does a great job of spelling this out, note the fishing license exception for February...

Recreational vehicles: For uninterrupted use or access, all necessary licenses or registrations should be renewed in early February.

Fishing, hunting and trapping: Licenses for the 2025-2026 season will not be available for purchase prior to early March. Residents and non-residents will be exempt from the requirements to possess a license to take game or fish from late February 2025 to early March. All regulations for seasons and bag limits remain in effect during this period. You must purchase your 2025 license once available to continue to take the game or fish.
