St. Paul's Barrel Theory Beer Company made Thrillist's list of "32 Hottest Breweries in America Right Now."

As far as food, drink, travel and entertainment reviews go, Thrillist is pretty high on the list of reputable and sought-after lists to make. So all Minnesotans should feel pretty proud to see another of our own make a recent list.

Barrel Theory Beer Co. in St. Paul made Thrillist's latest list of "32 Hottest Breweries in America Right Now." With some 6,500 craft breweries around the country right now -- and around 180 located right here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes -- making that list is no small deal.

"The 32 breweries on this list," writes the editors, "range from old-school favorites making new waves to up-and-comers offering destination-worthy pours."

Many of the breweries listed are up-and-comers in unsurprising craft beer hotspots like North Carolina, New York, Oregon and Chicago. A couple Wisconsin breweries also made the list. But smack-dab in the middle -- of the article and the country -- is Barrel Theory.

Barrel Theory’s three co-founders represent different facets of a brewery gemstone: tech, beer-brewing, and finance. All three worked together at Minnesota legend Surly before banding together to open Barrel Theory in summer 2017. Though “barrel” is in the name, that word means more than barrel-aging for the team: “Barrel theory” is the principle that a barrel’s capacity is only as much as its shortest stave. In brewery terms, you’re only as good as your “worst” beer. But there’s hardly a worst beer here, with IPAs of all types, pilsners, stouts, Berliner weisses and more keeping regulars coming back for more.

Personally, I can attest that Barrel Theory is brewing some of Minnesota's most creative beers. Previous favorites have included a bourbon barrel-aged Imperial Stout (Cocomac); Blueberry, Boysenberry and Raspberry Berliner (Bookoo Berries); and key lime pie Berliner (Key Sublime).
