Minnesota Lands On The 2024’s Worst States To Retire In

Hopefully, you still have plenty of time before retirement, but Minnesota isn't the best place to be if you are closer to retirement age. In a recent look at the best and worst states to retire in, Minnesota made the worst list, unfortunately.

According to the website Bankrate.com, ranked all 50 states across 5 different categories, each category was weighted differently, to find out the most friendly to retire states and the worst states to retire in.

The five categories that were used were:

• Affordability: Cost of living, taxes (40%).
• Well-being: Sense of community, entertainment (25%).
• Healthcare: Quality, cost, and access to health services (20%).
• Weather: Average annual temperatures, and natural disasters (10%).
• Crime: Property and violent crime rates (5%).

Each state was assigned a rank in each category, and then those rankings were added up. The lowest scores, indicated to Bankrate.com, reflected the best states to retire in and the higher a score a state got the worse off that state was.

Minnesota made the top 10 worst states to retire in, but where on that list did Minnesota fall?

The worst state to retire in according to Bankrate.com is Alaska. You can guess that Alaska scored a 50 for weather, but the Last Frontier came in at 49 for crime, and a 41 for affordability.

New York and Washington followed Alaska as the worst state to retire in, according to Bankrate.com.

Minnesota was down at 41, or the 10th-worst state to retire in.

Here's what Minnesota scored in the 5 categories:

• Weather: Average annual temperatures, and natural disasters (10%). [49]
• Crime: Property and violent crime rates (5%). [17]

Joining Minnesota in the 10-worst states to retire in from the Midwest was North Dakota at number 5.
