Amazon’s Job Cuts Hit 16,000 Corporate Positions Nationwide
There’s been another round of job cuts at both Amazon and UPS.
Wednesday, Amazon announced it was cutting 16,000 jobs across it’s network. Earlier this year, UPS announced it was cutting 30,000 jobs as well. It’s a sizeable enough cut to raise quite a few eyebrows, and raise the blood pressure of economic leaders nationwide.
Will any of the cuts affect Minnesota? Details have not been officially released, but the odds are likely.

UPS is currently in the middle of a multi-year restructuring plan called "Network of the Future," which includes cutting 30,000 operational jobs and closing 24 facilities in the first half of 2026 globally. Specific impacts in Minnesota include:
- Morris Facility Closure: UPS announced plans to close its package center in Morris, MN. Operations and package volume are being moved to centers in Alexandria and Fergus Falls, MN, as well as Watertown, SD. This closure affects 32 employees, including 20 full-time and 12 part-time workers.
- Minneapolis Hub Layoffs: In April 2025, UPS implemented a "temporary" layoff of 138 part-time workers at its Minneapolis hub located at 3312 Broadway St. NE. This reduction was part of a shutdown of the facility's "Minneapolis Day Sort" operation due to network changes.
- Eagan Facility Automation: In 2024, UPS initiated a "Change of Operations" in Eagan, MN, shutting down approximately half of the facility to retrofit it with automation features. During this process, work was diverted to facilities in Maple Grove, Minneapolis, and Shakopee.
- Red Wing Facility: Additional reports indicated that operations at the Red Wing, MN, facility concluded in early 2025.
Amazon's latest round of job cuts focuses on corporate and technology roles rather than warehouse or fulfillment center staff.
- 16,000 Corporate Roles: Amazon is eliminating roughly 16,000 corporate positions globally in its latest effort to reduce bureaucracy and shift focus toward artificial intelligence.
- Local Impact: While these cuts are global, they primarily impact white-collar employees in divisions such as devices, retail, and human resources. U.S.-based employees affected by these layoffs are generally given 90 days to seek other roles within the company before being offered severance.
- Store Closures: Amazon is also closing dozens of Amazon Fresh and automated Amazon Go stores as part of its restructuring; however, most of these physical store closures have been concentrated in other major metropolitan areas rather than Minnesota.
The 2026 workforce reductions follow significant cuts in 2025, where UPS eliminated 48,000 positions and Amazon cut roughly 14,000 corporate roles. These changes are largely driven by a reduction in the volume of Amazon packages handled by UPS—which intends to lower its Amazon volume by more than 50% by the second half of 2026—and a broader shift toward automation and AI within both companies.
