Another big retailer has announced that they will close several dozen stores in the upcoming year. Macy's, founded in 1858, will close 66 stores in 2025- including two in Minnesota.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” said Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc in a statement on its website.

The two Minnesota stores slated for closure are at the Burnsville Center in Burnsville and Maplewood Mall in Maplewood. According to Macy's the stores are expected to close some time during 2025's first quarter.

Macy's says their "Bold New Chapter" strategy is 'designed designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth which includes closing approximately 150 underproductive stores over a three-year period while investing in its 350 go-forward Macy’s locations through fiscal 2026,' according to the company's statement on its website.

Macy's currently has eight Minnesota locations (including the two slated for closure). Macy's will remain open at Bloomington's Mall of America, Edina's Southdale Mall, Ridgedale Mall in Minnetonka, Apache Mall in Rochester, Rosedale Mall in Roseville and at Crossroads Center in St. Cloud.

Macy's says that since starting their 'Bold New Chapter,' which included investments in pilot Macy's locations, has boosted sales for three consecutive quarters.
