Local Excitement Builds For Krispy Kreme's Fridley Reopening

Wednesday morning...they were baaaaack! Krispy Kreme Donut shop officially opened again in Minnesota. The Fridley location has opened at 5696 University Ave. Yesterday morning, the line was wrapped around the block, and the cars were lined up as well. People were passing the time playing bags and jenga. Why not? Have some fun and eat some deep-fried goodness while playing some games in the parking lot.

IS THIS ONLY HYPE

Last time Krispy Kreme opened up in Maple Grove, the same thing happened. Crazy lines and traffic needing to be directed around the area because of how congested it was. That first week brought in sales of almost $500,000. That's DONUTS!! No official word on what the take was yet from yesterday's first day sales. But the big telling point will be if it lasts this time, 17 years later or not.

Many of the comments on WCCO's facebook page state that local bakeries are better, not worth the hype, too expensive, etc. Others are happy about it and hope it lasts this time, and not open too many locations too fast and crash and burn like last time.

WHAT HAPPENED THE LAST TIME

“The mistake that [Krispy Kreme] made was in assuming that it was going to be able to generate and keep generating those sales from those existing locations,” Maze told Twin Cities Business at the time. You can only eat donuts so many times, he added, unlike coffee, which is often purchased repeatedly throughout the week.

HOT DONUTS

Krispy Kreme's claim to fame is the hot donuts. They do have other donuts that you can purchase as well, but they are known for their hot original glazed donuts. And, if you have ever had one, you will know what I mean. If the same donuts are not hot, or at least warm, they are just like any other glazed donut - in my opinion. The same sort of donut you can get at Kwik Trip - the glazers as they are called there, and they are very good. But the hot donuts at Krispy Kreme are definitely a thing.

If you do plan on going down to Fridley to check out the Krispy Kreme craze, maybe wait a minute, or bring some sort of entertainment with you to pass the time.
