7 Things to Know About Minnesota – Do You Agree?
People moving to Minnesota - there are some things to consider. Although - not everything that people hear from other states is accurate. Like when asked if we every get rid of our snow. YES! But I suppose to other states when it's hot here, that isn't news. All they hear about is the cold winters, but here we are, the land of extremes. We get both hot and humid and frigid temps too.
If you are someone that is moving to Minnesota, or if you know of someone who is moving here, what would you tell them about the state? Here is one person's view on moving to the Bold North.
Yes, winter is real. Snow can show up in October and stick around into April.
While that is true, that is not the norm. In fact, it rarely happens that way. The good thing is that nothing lasts that long - usually. The temps go up and down, and honestly, I know it's become a joke, but when it's in the single digits, but it's sunny with no wind, it really doesn't feel that bad. You still need to bundle up, but it doesn't feel as bad as the same temp with snow and wind.
2️⃣ When it comes to garages, the bigger the better.
This one is kind of true. People will use their garages to park their cars, but also they can also be a place with all sorts of recreational activities and a ton of storage. You will need that room for lawn mowers AND snow blowers.
3️⃣ Basements are a whole extra level of living.
Basements aren't just for storage. People here will use them as gathering places - that is usually where friends and family will gather to watch the game, socialize and have holiday fun.
4️⃣ The Twin Cities are more spread out than they look.West Metro, East Metro and South Metro all feel different.
5️⃣ School districts don’t follow city lines.A suburb name doesn’t tell you the district. Always check the address, not the city.
Plus, if you are willing to drive your kids to another school that you prefer, many times that is an option. Live where you want, and send your kids to a school that you prefer.
6️⃣ Minnesota Nice doesn’t mean instant friends. People here are friendly, but a lot of them have known each other since grade school. Breaking into those circles takes time. So get involved. Find your local gym, your coffee shop, a church, community events, your kids’ sports teams. Show up consistently, and you’ll find your people before you know it.
One thing that I have also noticed is that people will stop and help you out, and wave to you when they see you, they might even stop to talk while around the neighborhood. However, that does not necessarily translate to you being include in all of their social events. That mght take a bit more time. Like years in some cases.
7️⃣ Property taxes can vary significantly.
There will be neighborhoods right next to eachother with significantly different levels of property taxes. And many times it has to do with improvements that have or had to be done. Like a school upgrade or any other road upgrades or something like that.
So, this is what was in the video - one person's take and mine added to it as a "most of my life" Minnesotan.
