Congratulations to Deshauna Barber, our 2016 Miss USA from Washington D.C.!

I love beauty pageants. I have never had the chance to participate in one, nor should I, I have the face for radio, but I was a pageant coach for my sister last year when she was Miss Teen Todd County 2015.

Pageants aren't just about pretty dresses and good looks. A lot of work goes into them with fundraising, creating a platform, volunteering in the community and so much more.

I think Deshauna was the perfect choice for Miss USA. Of course Miss Minnesota had my vote right away but Miss Washinton DC had a stage presence about her that was undeniable.

Her interview question was about the U.S. Military and I loved her response,

“As a woman in the United States Army, I think it was an amazing job by our government to allow women to integrate to every branch of the military. We are just as tough as men. As a commander of my unit, I am powerful. I am dedicated. And it is important that we recognize that gender does not limit us in the United States Army."

She is going to be an excellent role model for young girls whether they are interested in pageants, joining the military or just being leaders in their communities and I look forward to following Deshauna's career as Miss USA 2016.
