Closing Time In Brainerd As Newspaper Printing Facility To Close Down
It was a sad day for community members in the Brainerd area yesterday. The Brainerd Daily Dispatch newspaper announced it was closing its local printing facility and moving its operations to the Detroit Lakes area by the end of September.
In a sign of the times post from the newspaper, the paywalled announcement discussed how many people would be affected by the closure. Lakeland PBS had some more details on the announcement.
According to Lakeland PBS online, "The article says Brainerd began offering commercial printing almost a half-century ago, and more than 35 newspapers are currently printed each week at the Brainerd plant. That includes the Dispatch on Wednesdays and Saturdays and weeklys like the Pineandlakes Echo Journal and the Echoland Shopper. The printing of those editions will now move to Detroit Lakes."
Lakeland PBS went on to say that "the printing operation will move to a sister plant in Detroit Lakes by September 30th."
21 people are affected by the announcement, with those people working in the prepress, inserting, and press room.
The newspaper is owned by Forum Communication Company, which according to their website, has been a "family-owned business since 1878."
The Forum Communications Company also oversees and distributes the St. Cloud Live publication locally. Forum Communications has 21 cities in which it operates, including Willmar, Duluth, Alexandria, and St. Cloud.
This is just the latest bit of bad news for the print industry, earlier this year several newspaper brands in Southern Minnesota announced that they were ending after years of community service.
