A favorite dish around my house, especially as we head into cooler temps, is the Stracatto Pot Roast with Porcini Mushrooms.

We watch a lot of Food Network and love to cook and this recipe is pretty easy to execute (although leave yourself time as it will take a few hours to roast after you’ve prepared the pot).  Plus it produces a very filling dish with rich flavors.

The other day we were in the middle of making it and realized that our wine stash didn’t make it down with the other boxes from our move to St. Cloud.  All our red wine is still up in Fargo… and it was Sunday.  Totally forgot Minnesota doesn’t sell off-sale liquor on Sundays.  Crap!

So I went to my fridge to see what else was lying around.  Thanks to the Granite City on Tap beer fest, I just happened to have a bottle of Shake Chocolate Porter in there and thought, “What the heck?  Let’s try it!”

I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome!  The porter produced a very rich and creamy gravy with just a hint of chocolate.   Found it hard to stop eating it.  The only thing it was missing was a little acidity, but I bet you could make up for it if you added a touch of apple cider vinegar or something similar.
