"Don't swallow the watermelon seeds or you'll grow a watermelon in your tummy." We've all heard food myths. The question is, do you know what's myth, and what's reality? Here are some common myths. See if these myths shock you.

SUGAR MAKES KIDS HYPERACTIVE

A study in 1995 found no connection between kids' behavior and how much sugar they were eating.

VITAMIN C HELPS PREVENT COLDS

A study that was conducted in 2013 found that it is true ONLY for people who get lots and lots of exercise, like serious marathon runners. For the rest of us, it could shorten the DURATION of a cold, but it doesn't prevent you from getting sick.

DIABETES COMES FROM TOO MUCH SUGAR

Well...The answer is...it CAN be...but it's not necessarily true.  Diabetes has to do with gaining weight, so you can develop it from eating too much of ANYTHING at all...not JUST sugar.

CELERY IS A NEGATIVE CALORIE FOOD

Did you think that if you ate celery, you'd burn more calories consuming it than you do eating it? This is a myth. In reality, there aren't ANY negative calorie foods...so no. It's not negative caloric.  A large stock of celery contains about 10 calories, but when you eat and digest it, you only burn about 2 calories...I guess that depends on if you're sitting down or doing jumping jacks while you're eating it...and who wants to do that?

MULTIGRAIN BREAD IS GOOD FOR YOU

Be careful! It COULD be, but it depends on what's in the bread is what counts.  If the bread has REFINED grains, it won't have as much fiber and nutrients as whole grain bread. Make sure you read the label!
