Go to any movie or comedy show and you'll be told the same thing: silence your cellphone. It should go without saying, but it has to be said. And it's usually enough to say it once. Usually.

This - at minimum - needs to be applied in classrooms. More stories about positive results from classroom bans on cellphones are pouring in, and this should empower more school districts to follow suit.

Plenty has been written about cellphones in classrooms. Now that real-life results are being reported - with positive results - this should become the norm.

The latest report comes from Michigan, where East Jackson Secondary School banned cell phones from classrooms. Superintendent Jeff Punches (who I have on good authority does not like to pull any) says that after banning cellphones from classrooms, students are engaging in class instead of doomscrolling social media.

Instead of the expected "battle" from kids being cut-off from their dopamine machines, secondary school principal Joel Cook said, "Honestly, kids were relieved. Most parents were relieved."

Who'da thunk?

Cook went on to say that students are finally talking to each other at lunch, and engaging in classroom discussion, debate, and appropriate arguments. He also noted that behavioral referrals have dropped by about 40%.

I began the article suggesting the "mute your phones" rule found in comedy clubs and movie theaters be applied to classrooms. That should be the floor (bare minimum). Even as an adult, I notice my mood improving when I take extended breaks from social media.

I encourage you to do the same.
