The Minnesota State Patrol posted a scary video yesterday showing a motorist failing to stop for a school bus and narrowly missing a 4th grade student.

In a video posted to Facebook, a school bus is seen stopping to pick up a Zumbrota-Mazeppa Elementary School student. The bus's arm is extended and lit, indicating that all motorists both ahead of and behind the bus must yield. However, a vehicle approaching the bus at what appears to be a high speed fails to stop, narrowly missing the student as she enters the road to board the bus.

"The dangers are real," the State Patrol's caption reads before going on to list rules and cautions of the road:

• Motorists must stop at least 20 feet from a school bus that is displaying red flashing lights or a stop arm when approaching from the rear and from the opposite direction on undivided roads.
• Motorists should slow down, pay attention and anticipate school children and buses, especially in neighborhoods and school zones.
• The best way to be aware of your surroundings at all times is to put the distractions away.
• Drivers can face criminal charges for passing a school bus on the right, passing when a child is outside the bus, or injuring or killing a child

In a follow-up post, they share some sobering statistics. During the annual one-day stop-arm survey, 2,360 Minnesota school bus drivers reported:

• 513 motorists passing illegally coming towards the bus.
• 112 motorists passing illegally from behind the bus.
• 625 total violations.

Those violations were in one day.

The reminder comes just days after an 11-year old girl in Minneapolis was hit by a car while getting off the school bus; she's undergone "multiple brain surgeries" according to Bring Me the News.
