Doggie Tail Wags Are Not All the Same – What Do They Mean?

Alright - I know that this subject seems a litlle odd, but this morning my dog was looking up at me and his tail was not wagging back and forth, but rather in a circle.  It was really cute, but I got to thinking with all of the different tail wags that one might see from a dog, do they mean different things?  Short answer is yes, they do mean different things and not all of them mean that they are happy.

A dog wagging its tail in a circle—often called a "helicopter" or "propeller" tail—is generally a sign of extreme happiness, excitement, or pure joy. This behavior usually indicates a friendly, positive mood, frequently displayed when greeting beloved owners or dog friends

The circle tail wag does mean that they are happy.  Probably the happiest they can be.  So, that makes me happy that my pup is a happy little dog.  I did a little research and found out that there are several different types of tail wags.  Let's unpack that.

THE FAST, ALL THE WAY SIDE TO SIDE BROAD WAG

This one means your pup is happy.  They are about to get treats, playtime, or just seeing their human.

SOMETIMES THERE IS A VERY SLOW AND LOW WAG

This one can happen when your pup is meeting someone new, or they are unsure of a situation or they are a little uneasy.

WHAT DOES A WAG MEAN THAT IS HIGH AND STIFF WAG

This one might mean alertness or they are trying to show some dominance.  It is also means they are in a somewhat protective mode.  If youi see a dog doing this, you might want to proceed with caution.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN A DOG'S TAIL IS LOW, BUT WAGGING FAST

This one is similar to the slow wag, it does show some nervousness or they are a little uneasy, but they feel like whoever they are around is friendly.  They just need to warm up a bit.

WHAT IF YOUR DOGS TAIL IS TUCKED, BUT ALSO STILL WAGGING A BIT

In short, this still means that the dog has some anxiety, because it is tucked in.  But if it's still wagging a bit, then it means that they would like some comfort, but still keep your distance.  Although, I have seen my dog like that, and if I approach him his tail will go faster. So that's a good sign, right?  One would think so.

I always wish I could understand my dog.  Like if he could talk that would help so much instead of trying to guess what he wants.  Sometimes it's obvious, and other times it's like what could you possibly need?
