ST. NICHOLAS - It was a sight that words simply cannot capture.

Hundreds upon hundreds of law enforcement officers, lights flashing, led the procession on Wednesday afternoon from Collegeville's St. John's Abbey, through Cold Spring and Richmond, before arriving in the tiny community of St. Nicholas to bury one of their own.

The riveting sight was the final step in laying to rest Cold Spring Police Officer Tom Decker, 31, shot and killed last Thursday during a welfare check in Cold Spring.

Officers from all over Minnesota, the Midwest and Canada led the procession, followed by family members and friends, and finally, a horse-drawn, flag-covered hearse bearing the casket of Officer Decker.

Burial services were held at the St. Nicholas Cemetary, just around the corner from where Officer Decker grew up.

Officers stood at attention when the casket arrived at the grave site, waiting for the sounds of taps, bagpipes and a 21-gun salute.

Decker's wife, Alicia, was presented with the flag draped across her late husband's casket before sharing a hug with Cold Spring Police Chief Phil Jones.

Authorities continue their investigation into the shooting of Decker,  and many questions remain unanswered.

However, hundreds of headlights streaming out of St. Nicholas following the services leave no room for doubt - today's services were truly fit for a hometown hero.
