I think having a crappy job when you’re a teenager builds character and makes you really appreciate when you land the job you love. I love the job I currently have, but it wasn’t always this good. I had my fair share of crumby gigs.

The summer before college started I worked in a factory for two months and it was awful. My job was to package and box random items that people bought from a catalog–it was a distribution center. The hours were long, there wasn’t an AC unit in the building and your breaks were extremely short.

I was given the option to pick up a few shifts and make a little extra cash. I picked up three 15 hour days in a row. By the third day I was tired, sore and I had huge bruises on both of my legs from leaning up against the conveyor belt for nearly 45 hours in three days. In addition to it being physically demanding, it was some of the most mind numbing work ever. I was beyond bored and actually felt a sense of gloom while working there. By the end of the day, I accidentally knocked over a gallon of glue that was hiding underneath a table. I was getting yelled at by everyone on my team for not keeping up with quota and I was demanded to clean up the glue by my boss–All at the same time.  At that point I had, had enough. I quit my job right after that. It was the worst job I’ve ever had.

Whenever I’m stressed out or overwhelmed with my current job, I think about that summer job and how awful it was. It’s a great reminder that things could always be worse…much worse! What’s the worst summer job you’ve ever had?
