Taylor Swift Makes American Music Awards History as Most-Awarded in a Single Night
Taylor Swift made history at the 2019 American Music Awards on Sunday (Nov. 24) night, more than once.
During the evening, Swift took home six awards in total — Artist of the Year, Favorite Music Video for "You Need to Calm Down," Favorite Female Artist - Pop/Rock, Favorite Album - Pop/Rock for Lover and Favorite Artist - Adult Contemporary — making her the most-awarded artist in a single night in the history of the AMAs.
The 29-year-old was also the first artist to be honored with the AMAs' Artist of the Decade prize. Swift delivered a medley of her hits in a show-stopping performance that also featured pop artists Camila Cabello and Halsey.
Leading up to the AMAs, fans weren't sure what to expect after the superstar revealed that her former record label, Big Machine, was not allowing her to perform songs from her first six albums, which they own the masters' rights to. That didn't end up holding her back, and although she didn't technically mention the ongoing battle with her former label, she did make a statement with her performance.
Aside from being the most-awarded artist of the evening, Swift also became the most honored artist in American Awards history with 26 total wins, spanning her career. She also broke Michael Jackson's record for most Artist of the Year wins — 2019's AMAs marked her fifth win in the category.
The American Music Awards are fan-voted.
At the end of the show, AMAs host Ciara brought Swift to the stage to inform her of her history-breaking night. The "Lover" singer was completely shocked and ended the evening dancing with Shania Twain as the credits rolled.
