Ice conditions are good in Central Minnesota but a lack of snow on area lakes recently has made ice fishing a bit challenging. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. He says we need some snow.

Temperatures in the upper 30s and rain today and in parts of Minnesota Saturday aren't ideal for ice anglers. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. He doesn't expect the rain and warmer than normal temps to have too much of a negative impact on ice conditions in Central Minnesota.

The cold weather is exactly what ice anglers were looking for. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. He says this winter has potential to be the best ice fishing in the state in the last 3 years.

Ice fishing is the next season in Minnesota and for some it is already underway. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. He says he is surprised how quickly Central Minnesota lakes froze and there a people ice fishing on lakes throughout the state.

The 2nd weekend of the firearms deer hunting season completed Sunday. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. He says approximately 112,000 deer have been shot during the firearms season so far.

The firearms deer hunting opener is Saturday November 9. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. He says the weather in Central Minnesota is a bit warmer than he'd like but the possibility of rain is more likely to cause trouble than the temperatures.

Minnesota's youth deer hunt ran from October 17-20. The DNR is reporting that over 6,000 deer were shot, which is up 10% from last year. The youth deer hunt is available for those 17 and under. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON.

Northwestern Minnesota has a fair amount of elk. The elk hunt in Minnesota took place from September 21-29. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News says only 10 permits were available to hunters and he says 8 elk were shot. Schmitt explains all 8 were male, bull elk.

The duck and goose seasons got underway in Minnesota last weekend. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. He says reports indicate mixed results. Schmitt talked with hunters who did very well while others didn't do as well.

The waterfowl season opens in Minnesota Saturday. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON to talk about what to expect. The duck season in Central Minnesota runs from September 21-19 and October 5-November 24.

The first 2024 bear harvest numbers are in from the Minnesota DNR and they are impressive. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. The first days of the Bear hunt September 1-3 Schmitt says, more bear were shot in the state that all of last season.

The opening of bear, teal, goose and dove seasons are Sunday in Minnesota. Glen Schmitt from Outdoor News joined me on WJON. It may seem odd that these seasons start on a Sunday but Schmitt explains the earliest these seasons can start based on framework set up by the Fish & Wildlife Service is September 1.
