Minnesota's history of girls playing basketball goes all the way back to the early 1900s. Girls starting playing the sport in Minnesota before boys in some locations in the state. Carleton College in Northfield is a location where the sport was first taught.
Albany will play Holdingford in the girls basketball Section 6-2-A final Friday at St. Cloud State. The top seeded Huskies had no trouble with upset minded 12th seeded Annandale by posting a 78-34 win at St. John's Wednesday night.
Cathedral girls basketball earned a 44-33 win over Kimball in the Section 6AA first round playoffs Thursday night. Ella Voit led Cathedral with 16 points, 7 boards, 4 steals and 2 assists.
The 3rd seeded Albany girls basketball team defeated 2nd seeded Goodhue 48-45 Friday night in the Class 2-A State Semifinals at Williams Arena. Albany led 21-18 at halftime and held off Goodhue down the stretch.
Albany has successfully advanced to the Class 2-A State Tournament Semifinals after topping Perham 51-38 Wednesday night at Maturi Pavillon. The Huskies led 26-18 at halftime and outscored Perham 25-20 in the 2nd half.
Central Minnesota will be well represented at the girls basketball state tournament this week. In Class 2-A Albany is seeded 3rd and New London-Spicer is seeded 4th. Becker is the top seed and Alexandria is seeded 3rd in 3-A. Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa is seeded 5th in Class A.
