ST. CLOUD - The Great River Regional Library and the American Library Association have teamed up to showcase the benefits of having a library card.

September is National Library Card Sign-Up month and this year marks the 30th Anniversary.

Libraries have become a place for children to gain an interest in reading, and while a library is mostly know for having books, they also offer magazines, DVDs, computers, games, e-books and other media materials.

Abby Faulkner of the Great River Regional Library says there are endless opportunities for learning.

"We have educational programs that can teach people new skills like web tools like Photoshop, how to fix their own cars or how to do a genealogical review. When you get a library card you are able to access more than just physical books."

Signing up for a library card is a simple process and chances are you will walk-out with a card same-day. Faulkner says if you sign up in the month of September they will have a few additions to help you on your journey into the library.

"When you sign up for your card you will get a library superuser checklist. The checklist has a bunch of activities on it like signing up for a library card, attending a library program/event, checking out book or CD. Each time you check something off you can take it to the librarian and you will be entered into a drawing for a Barnes and Noble gift card."

The Great River Regional Library is 32 different public libraries spread throughout Central Minnesota.
