Answers Pet Food out of Pennsylvania, is voluntarily withdrawing certain lots of products after samples collected by the US Food and Drug Administration were reported to have tested positive for Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.

ILLNESS

No illnesses have been confirmed, but they wanted to be safe because Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes have been detected.

They also want people to know that although animals eating the products can become ill, Listeria monocytogenes rarely cause illness in dogs; but it can happen. Even if the dog is not showing signs of sickness, such as diarrhea and vomiting, it can still be a carrier of the bacteria and be spread to humans.

SYMPTOMS

People can become sick by handling Listeria-contaminated food or touching surfaces that have been exposed and symptoms in humans include:

• Fever
• Headache
• Muscle aches
• Stiff neck
• Nausea
• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea
• Confusion
• Loss of balance
• Convulsions

People handling pet food with Salmonella can also become infected, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed.

Although there are thousands of species of Salmonella, less than a handful are harmful to pets and humans, according to Answerpetfood.com.

The lots that were affected were distributed throughout the United States in retail stores, as well as made available online.
