Even better is that four Minnesota cities made the list. So if you want make it a road trip within the state, you have choices of where to go.

Now don’t go confusing affordable with cheap. Cheap has a negative connotation of being lower in quality. But affordable is just less costly.

The four Minnesota towns that made the list and where they landed in the list:

  1. Number 64 on the list:  Grand Marais, MN is a town of just over 1,300 people on Lake Superior’s North Shore. It was also named America’s coolest small town by Budget Travel Magazine. There are lots of outdoor options like free access to the beaches as well as other activities like fishing & biking so families don’t need to spend a lot of money.

  1. Number 132 on the list:  Lanesboro, MN is a town of just over 700 people. This was once a dying town that was partially resurrected by a 60 mile paved route along the old Milwaukee Road Railroad route.

  1. Number 154 on the list:  Nisswa, MN is located in the heart of the Brainerd Lakes Area. There’s lots of affordable lodging for families.

  1. Number 164 on the list:  New Ulm, MN is in the scenic Minnesota River Valley. The 2000 Federal Consensus called it the "The Most German city in the USA!" There is a vibrant downtown area with lots of retail and restaurants.  Stop by the Visitor Center for FREE coffee and cookies.
