One Direction cleaned up nice, donning black suits to perform 'Story of My Life' and 'Through the Dark' on 'SNL' (Dec. 7).

The producers and bookers certainly got their money's worth, since 1D not only performed twice but they also appeared in the opening monologue and a digital skit -- and did so gamely and with comedic flair.

The ratings probably increased tenfold in the under 16 demo (not normally one that 'SNL' covets or seeks, of course!) thanks to all the 1D action.

The boys have been performing 'Story of My Life' in a circle, where each member steps to the front to sing his part, then moves right along so the next vocalist can deliver his part. They did the same for this performance and it's a simple but effective stage convention.

It's Harry Styles who leads the song, and he was at the center of the performance, but it was a flawless performance of their folky smash, thanks to every member of 1D.

The boys next returned to the stage for a toe-tapping version of the equally folky, uptempo 'Through the Dark' and it was most excellent. Can you say "Flawless?" Well, you need to, since that's what it was.

Louis Tomlinson was not kidding when he said that 1D is the boy band that doesn't dance. They don't need to -- they just sing and entertain.
