Beyond Ridiculous! A Tsunami Threat in Fargo??
Oh boy. So we probably have all heard about the tsunami in Hawaii and all the way over to the California coast. This was caused by an 8.8 earthquake in Russia. And I know that can be scary if you are in those areas where the pacific ocean could rise, surge and have a tsunami in those areas. People can die in those situations. As far as we know, no one died from this particular tsunami. But it has happened before.
This is taking it a bit too far. North Dakota??? Really??
National Weather ServiceThey actually felt that it was important enough that they needed to let people know that they do not have to worry about a tsunami. Honestly, even if there was an earthquake in that area, where would the water to create a huge tsunami come from? The biggest lake in the area is over on our side in Minnesota - Lake Superior. No worries there.
There have been water-related worries before in the Fargo and Grand Forks areas. When I first moved there in 2008, there was the 100-year flood in the Spring of 2009. It was crazy. Not quite as bad as in 1997, but close. The only reason it wasn't as bad was because they had dealt with their flood issues and put up protection in Grand Forks. Fargo was definitely dealing with flooding, sandbagging, earthen dykes, other flood protection around the city that I had never seen before. It really was an experience.
But a Tsunami? No. No worries there. I have no idea what would need to happen for any sort of that situation to happen in North Dakota. People, calm down.
