Kim Heil-Smith of Grand Marais was talking on the phone one night last week when she went to grab something out of her car. When she opened the door, she came face to face with a Mama Black Bear and her little cub. Kim said that the bear didn't have anyplace to go, so she lunged at her. Kim fell backward and put her knee up to keep the bear from taking a bite out of her. When the bear moved in a little closer, Kim says she grabbed the bear by the nose and screamed at her to get out of her house. That must have been enough to scare it because the bear turned and walked out of the garage without further incident. Kim says she isn't mad at the bear for trying to attack her and understands that Mama Bear was just protecting her cub. Officials with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said that there haven't been any other similar incidents in the area and no one has seen the bear since, so there are no plans to trap it and transport it out of the area.

Jeopardy! Host Alex Trebek was sleeping peacefully in his California hotel room yesterday morning when he awoke to someone in his room rifling through his stuff. He attempted to chase the prowler down when his Achilles tendon ruptured. He fell and got a nasty bruise on his other leg. The burglar was a 56-year-old woman who took cash and jewelry from Trebek's hotel room. She was caught by hotel security and is facing charges. Trebek is going to have surgery tomorrow and expected to be fine.
