Minnesota Fish House Removal Deadline Coming Monday
Time flies when you're having fun, out on the lake, catching fish. It flies by so fast in fact, that the deadline for having your fish house off the lake is nearly already here.
Fish houses on lakes in roughly the southern two-thirds of the state need to be removed from the ice no later than Monday night (3/1/2021) and midnight. Houses on lakes across the northern third of the state get an extra two weeks.
Date of removal line is formed by an east-west line formed by U.S. Hwy. 10, east along Hwy. 34 to Minnesota Hwy. 200, east along Hwy. 200 to U.S. Hwy. 2, and east along Hwy. 2 to the Minnesota-Wisconsin border.
Inland Waters Removal Deadlines
- South of line: March 1, 2021
- North of line: March 15, 2021
Border Waters Removal Deadlines
- Minnesota-Iowa: February 20
- Minnesota–Wisconsin: March 1
- Minnesota–North and South Dakota: March 5

County sheriffs may prohibit or restrict the use of motorized vehicles if dangerous ice conditions are present. If shelters are not removed, owners will be prosecuted. A conservation officer also may confiscate, remove or destroy any ice structure and its contents if not removed by the deadline.
Please Clean Up
It is against the law to leave any garbage on the ice. Please clean up around your shack. What stays on the ice stays in the lake.
It is illegal to leave an ice fishing house or shack, or any pieces of it on the ice anywhere in Minnesota. Check with local refuse providers or landfills for ice shelter disposal information.
