If you are like most Americans, you take at least one prescription medication. According to a report from Civic Science, they say that 70% of Americans take at least one pill per day. For many people, it’s multiple pills each day.

Why Having Unused Med's In Your House Is Dangerous?

With that many people taking that many medications, it’s no surprise that as often as prescriptions can be changed, there are a lot of pill bottles sitting idle in medicine cabinets and drawers all around Central Minnesota that have pills in them that aren’t going to be used.

Pills being stolen out of someone’s home is a leading way that pills, especially opioids, make it on to the streets and are being sold illegally. It’s hard to protect your medications at all times if you have people in your home on even a semi-regular basis.

There are events each year where you can drop off pills with no questions asked, and those medicines will be disposed of correctly. But those events don’t happen as often as some people need to be able to clear their home of med’s they are no longer taking.

A Local Solution!

If you’re one of those folks who have unused medications that you would like to dispose of safely, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office is giving you that opportunity.

The Sheriff’s Office has a drop box in their lobby that is open during office hours so that you can drop medications in so that Sheriff's Officials can safely get rid of them.

There is no charge to dispose of your medications at the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, and there will be no questions asked when you stop by. This is an effort by the Sheriff's Office to try and keep dangerous drugs off the streets of Benton County and Central Minnesota.
