That was quick! Mariah Carey has officially joined ‘American Idol‘ as a judge for Season 12, which kicks off in 2013.

In what seems to be a quick move, Fox announced at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour in Beverly Hills today that Mariah Carey would be replacing fellow "diva" judge, Jennifer Lopez on American Idol. How did this deal get done so fast? Randy Jackson is Carey’s co-manager and helped seal the deal. There is talk that they want Jennifer back, but she wants a big raise! I don't blame her! Two vocal divas on one show? I don't think the judges table is big enough!

“I am so excited to be joining ‘Idol,' I wanted to be there today and I wish I could have been there myself to tell you. I can’t wait to get started in a couple months.”

Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe had expressed his displeasure over the public search for a judge and how it’s difficult to negotiate properly, given the intense media speculation that follows the show.

”There are thousands of names being thrown out and it’s unfair on negotiations. You can’t negotiate with somebody in a public marketplace.”

He also mentioned he would like to see the judge’s change each season. Is that just a security blanket in case Mariah backs out after one season?  Next up: Who's replacing Steven Tyler?
