DON'T MISS THE 'PLANET PARADES'

What can take your thoughts off of the cold in January this year? How about a Planet Parade?

This month you'll be able to look up at the night sky and see a 6 planet alignment.

The time to look up at the night sky will be right after sunset. Some you might need a telescope to see them with, but others will be visible with the naked eye. If you need to get a telescope for this event, you can always try to check one out from the St. Cloud Great River Regional Library, where they have many fairly new telescopes that you can bring home on checkout.

BEST DAYS TO SEE THE 6 PLANET PARADE

The best days to see the planets where they are going to be pretty close together, will be January 17th through the 18th, according to a meteorologist. (Watch the video below). That doesn't mean you've missed it if you can't catch it tonight. The alignment will be visible for a few days afterward as well.

6 planet alignments are not super rare, but they don't happen as often as you think they would. A 7-planet alignment, on the other hand, is pretty rare, but there will be a 7-planet alignment this February 2025 towards the end of the month. You will also want to check the night sky right after sunset on that one as well.

NASA PHOTOS

In the video below, the pictures used are from NASA.

The planets that you will be seeing during the 6 planet alignment, you'll see Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune.

You'll want to look to the south and east. You'll see Mars over to the left, then Jupiter, then Uranus, then Neptune, and then Saturn. Everything is sort of on the same side, except for Mercury, which changes in February. But in January we won't see it because it's hiding on the other side of the sun.

WHAT WILL IT LOOK LIKE?

It will sort of have a rainbow shape across the night sky. There will be just a little bit of light, and then Saturn might look like it's under Venus. Uranus will be hard to see unless you have a telescope, as well as Neptune. If you can find Venus, you might have to squint a bit to see Saturn, but you should be able to see it. Good Luck with your nighttime viewing!
