For This Week Only, Minnesotans Don’t Need A License To Fish
We've entered uncharted waters in Minnesota. It all began yesterday at midnight. Due to changes to the licensing system, all Minnesotans can go fishing this week without a license, but the 'holiday' won't last much longer.
Changes On The Way To MN DNR's System
The reason Minnesotans don't need a license this week is due to a change coming to the DNR's licensing system. For the next 5+ days, the department is unable to print fishing licenses, which means anyone can drop a line without paying for a license, through Monday.
Specifically, the Minnesota DNR noted:
"As the DNR transitions data to the new ELS [electronic licensing system], fishing license sales will be paused and anglers may fish without a license from 12 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, through 11:59 p.m. Monday, June 8. All other fishing season regulations and bag limits will remain in effect. At 12 a.m. June 9, the new ELS will be available for anglers and hunters."
No License Doesn't Mean No Rules
Even though Minnesotans aren't required to have a fishing license this week, that doesn't mean the rest of the rulebook has been thrown out. Limits and regulations are still in effect, meaning if you break the rules and get caught by an enforcement agent, you'll get a ticket.
Northern Pike Biting Right Now
Speaking of fishing, if you are into catching pike, now is the time to go. They are recovered from spawning and hungry. Your best bet to catch one will be along weed edges, warming bays, and shallow structure.

I know pike aren't everyone's top fish to catch, but freshly pickled pike can't be beat. Here's a recipe that I like to use because it breaks down the Y-bones that are so tough to get out of the filets.
