This Costco Change Might Surprise Minnesota Families
Being a member of Costco comes with plenty of perks, but one of the most beloved benefits is changing, and not everyone will be thrilled about it.
With 14 locations across Minnesota, Costco is one of the state’s most popular retailers. On your next visit, you might notice something different when it comes to those famous free samples.

Free samples at Costco began in 1988. What many shoppers don’t realize is that these samples aren’t handed out by Costco employees. They’re provided by a third-party company called Club Demonstration Services (CDS).
Now, who is allowed to take those samples is changing.
Costco’s Free Sample Policy May Change in Minnesota
There’s never been a limit on how many samples you can take, but some locations are beginning to limit who can take them. If you’re a parent who lets your kids roam the aisles snagging snacks, this will affect you.

According to Parade, “Sample staff have reportedly been instructed not to hand anything out to unaccompanied kids, even if the child is polite, well-behaved, or has received samples before.”
In other words, no more sending the kids off on their own to stock up on goodies while you shop. They’ll need to be with a parent or guardian if they want a taste.
Why Costco Is Making the Change
The move is part of an effort to address safety and liability concerns. With the growing number of food allergies and dietary restrictions, Costco wants to ensure that a parent or guardian can provide consent before a child tries something.
So next time you're sample-hunting with the kids, expect to be by their side.
