This week I've been knocked on my butt with what I assumed to be allergies. I knew a reaction was coming last week when I saw cottonwood falling like snow on the golf course. I'm not the only one dealing with things like a stuffy nose and sore throat, my Instagram story feed has been filled with people sharing they are experiencing the same thing. But are these symptoms actually allergies, or is this a summer cold? Or even worse, COVID?

There have been multiple articles written online this past month comparing summer cold symptoms to those that come with COVID-19. Prevention.com shared:

At this point, it’s easy to assume you have COVID-19 if you suddenly develop symptoms like a sore throat, runny nose, and cough. But summer colds can and do happen—and infectious disease experts think we might see more of them this year.

The general hypothesis is that now we are seeing other people again as things open up, we will be exposed to certain viruses we haven't in the past year, like the common cold.

The basic symptoms of the common cold are:

  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Headaches
  • Body aches

All those symptoms are very similar to those associated with COVID-19. A helpful resource I found when going over the list of my own symptoms came from Hackensack Meridian Health:

Of course, the only way to know what it is for sure is to visit a medical professional and get tested for COVID-19. In the meantime, wash your hands, avoid touching your face, and try to stay as healthy as possible.
