On Wednesday, May 13, the governor announced he'd be lifting the stay at home order Monday as well as allowing malls and other retail establishments to open at 50 percent capacity.

That same day, Mayor Marstein sent a letter to the governor's office stating,

Small businesses, bars, restaurants, salons, and countless individuals have all been affected by the drastic economic slowdown and by the shelter-in-place directives ... As President Trump has said, not all states are the same, so too we can say that not all cities are the same."

While the stay at home order has been lifted, Walz extended Minnesota's peacetime emergency declaration. This means, he still has the power to keep some businesses closed through June 12. In Wednesday's press conference, Walz said, bars, restaurants, salons, gyms, barber shops and other businesses won't be able to open until June 1. In her letter, Mayor Marstein requested the governor to rethink his decision for her town,

On behalf of the City of Holdingford, I strongly encourage you to allow those small businesses to re-open as soon as possible."

The letter was signed by Marstein carbon copying Mayor Mary McComber, President of the Minnesota Association of Small Cities as well as David Umacht, Executive Director of the League of Minnesota Cities.

Editor's note: Mayor Marstein clarified she did not say she wants a May 18 open. Rather, sometime sooner than June 1. She is not advocating going against the governor's directive.
