Some of my favorite 4th of July memories over the years are of stocking up on fireworks and launching them off my grandparents dock on Lake Koshkonong.

Then again, that was Wisconsin where fireworks laws are significantly different than here in Minnesota.

With the 4th of July fast approaching, here's a reminder courtesy the Minnesota State Fire Marshal of which fireworks are legal -- and not -- here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes:

LEGAL

  • Sparklers
  • Sparkling items including
    • Cylindrical fountains
    • Cone fountains
    • Illuminating torches
    • Wheels
    • Ground spinners
    • Flitter sparklers
    • Flash/strobes
  • Novelty items including
    • Snakes
    • Glow worms
    • Noisemakers

ILLEGAL

  • Any fireworks that are explosive
  • Any fireworks that are aerial
  • Firecrackers
  • Ladyfingers
  • Sky rockets
  • Bottle rockets
  • Missile type rockets
  • Roman candles
  • Mines or shells attached to a base that propel into the air
  • Chasers
  • Parachutes
  • Aerial shells

Basically, if it flies or explodes it's illegal in Minnesota.
