This week on ‘American Idol‘ we met contestant Heejun Han’s adorable parents and watched his Mom tear up as she recalled that how her baby Heejun always woke up with a smile on his face.

Han took the stage smiling tonight as he prepared to take on a song from the year he was born, choosing ‘Right Here Waiting’ by Richard Marx. While worried in his practice with will.i.am about his accent hindering the performance, it didn’t stop the jokester from asking the mentor if he could get fellow Black Eyed Pea’s member Fergie’s phone number.

Well he may be prepared to do whatever it takes (even if his heart breaks) America might not be waiting to vote Han as their idol. The judges had mixed reactions, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler giving positive but lackluster feedback and Randy Jackson telling Han “I didn’t really enjoy this at all. It was pitchy all over the place and it felt like you were out of breath the whole time.” He went on to say that he missed Han’s urban R&B swag, and felt the singer chose the wrong song and went “too pop.” Tyler agreed that it wasn’t a great song choice, but said he loved it anyways.

Lopez had better words for Han calling his tone “special and gorgeous” and said while she could feel him struggling throughout the performance she still adored it. While he gave it his all and put his heart in the song, we’re not sure if that’s going to be enough to keep him in the game. He’s got the chops when it comes to singing and certainly knows how to entertain, but we’re waiting for the cane to come and pull him off the stage.
