Kudos to the St. Cloud Rox, my wife and I along with some friends went to the game last Friday night. We really enjoyed the game from the Sports Deck and the environment at Joe Faber Field. It’s a great place to go to watch a game.

But at Friday home games, the Rox feature fireworks following the game. So, for us to go last Friday we had an extra special incentive to go on Friday, and the Rox fireworks shows are always good.

Fireworks are on the minds of a lot of people this week, especially with the Fourth of July on Friday. And you’ve probably noticed in certain parking lots around Central Minnesota, there is a tent or some sort of stand with someone selling “fireworks”.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety reminds you that fireworks are illegal in Minnesota? The State of Minnesota has pretty strict guidelines about fireworks. According to state statute 624.20, it is illegal for a person to possess, offer for sale, expose for sale, advertise, use or explode any fireworks.

Why Can There Be Public Fireworks Displays If Fireworks Are Illegal?

It is legal for municipalities and organizations like the St. Cloud Rox to feature fireworks because an engineer who has a license to set off fireworks is overseeing the operation.

The engineer has undergone the training to properly handle and then light the fireworks up so we can enjoy the show.

So, if it's illegal to possess or explode fireworks in Minnesota, what is available at these tents and stands that pop-up this time of year?

The statute says that sparklers, ground-based sparklers and special products like party poppers and sparkler snakes can be purchased. But you can’t buy anything that explodes, like firecrackers or anything that shots into the air, such as bottle rockets and roman candles.

There is a safety concern with having the “forbidden fruit” but there’s also the inconvenience that comes along with law enforcement catching you with those items.

Keep that in mind as you’re planning whatever celebrations you have planned for this week.
