If you are thinking about taking a walk out in the woods this weekend, or have outdoor plans soon, be sure to be looking down. It's antler-shedding season right now for deer and if you are up north, moose, too. Some states in the US require that you have a permit to collect shed antlers, but what does the state of Minnesota say about collecting shed antlers? Do you need a permit?

The good news is you don't need a permit here in the Land of 10,000 Antler Sheds. But there are some places where you CAN'T collect sheds. Here's a rundown of what you need to know about collecting antler sheds.

It is illegal to remove sheds from National Parks, Minnesota State Parks, and Scientific and Natural Areas.

Minnesota Statute 97B.22 states that:

(a) A person may take and possess naturally shed antlers without a license.

(b) A person may not place, arrange, or set equipment in a manner that is likely to artificially pull, sever, or otherwise cause antlers of live deer, moose, elk, or caribou to be shed or removed.

If you want to go and look for shed antlers there are some places you might want to look first, but ultimately it's all about having some luck, and a keen eye.

Pine Knot News shared that if you are looking for sheds, you will want to find "an area with good food and water sources is also key when looking for sheds. A quality late season food source will keep bucks around, so look for fresh sign and trails between bedding areas and food sources. Keep these things in mind when going out shed hunting this winter and be prepared to cover a lot of ground while searching. Lastly, shed hunting is a great way to scout for next year’s hunting season, especially the late hunting season."
