When I was in college I remember learning from one of my college professors that it was illegal to sell your used mattress in Minnesota. But, according to several sources, that's just not true.

According to the mattress vendor Nolah, used mattresses in Minnesota have to have specific labels as well as go through sanitization process first, and then you can legitimately sell them.

Bedding needs to be sanitized because they can be really dirty and contain bed bugs, MRSA and other sketchy bacteria. Yuck, it gives me the creeps thinking about it.

But, there's no law that says you can't give your mattress away to someone for free. That's why you'll see a lot of people who are selling bedding online include their used mattress for free with the purchase of a bedframe and headboard. That way, they don't have to sanitize it.

Minnesota Statue 325F.31 states, 

" If any of the material used in the making or remaking of such article of bedding shall have been previously used, the words "manufactured of secondhand material" or "remade of secondhand material."

So, if you're looking to get rid of your old bedding in the New Year, and you want some cash for it, you'll need to make sure to properly sanitize it first. Otherwise, you can always just give it away for free...or recycle it.

According to Hennepin County's website, "Mattresses in good condition can be sold or given away."
