The official start to summer happens on Monday with Memorial Day. Generally speaking, the start of summer often means road trip season will begin, and is there anything more frustrating after a road trip than seeing all the dead bugs stuck to the front of your car? Here are some easy ways to keep your vehicle looking clean, even after a long road trip.

Road trips aren't for everyone

Summer road trips, bleh! That is pretty much what I thought of them growing up. We didn't take the traditional summer vacation, instead, we often were involved with summer sports, or we headed to Hastings, where we had our boat docked, and we would travel the Mississippi and St. Croix Rivers.

Once I hit a certain age, I really didn't mind road trips. I was in control, I didn't have to go through security or have to sit for hours waiting to get on a plane. One of the painful parts of a road trip is when you are done, your car is generally caked in dead bugs. Yuck!

The best ways to get rid of those dead bugs

If you like a clean-looking car, seeing those dead bugs splattered across your grill and bumper is enough to drive your eye to twitch. If you struggle like I do in getting the bugs off, because the car wash doesn't always get the job done, here are a few easy tips to try to get the bugs off and your shine back.

  • If it's pretty hot outside, grab a spray bottle loaded up with some water and spray the dried bugs. Soaking them in water before scraping them off makes the job easier.
  • Try a degreaser like Schaeffer’s CITROL. This guy on YouTube loves it, and from some of his past videos, the cars he details always look tremendous.
  • Try baby shampoo mixed with water
  • ODD ONE HERE: Soak dryer sheets in a spray bottle of water, then spray the bugs.

Of course, you can just get it washed a few times

You can take it to a carwash, too, but that doesn't always seem to get all the bugs off.
