AVON -- Food, music and fun for the family, Avon is hosting their 1st annual Music in the Park.

The event will be at the Lake Wobegon Trail Park, Thursday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The Avon Area Arts organization is hosting the summer event. Doug Millaway is the Vice President of the organization he says Music in the Park will be a way for artists to showcase their work.

"We're going to have my band which is Broken Fiddle we'll be playing this Thursday, prior to our starting up session that night we'll have an opener, her name is Stella Hennen from Cold Spring. [She] is a 12-year-old girl from ROCORI Jr. High. And that's one of the things that we like to do, is to look at emerging artists and give them a chance to get out on stage."

Millaway says he saw Hennen perform at the Avon Spunktacular Days talent show and was impressed. She is known for singing and playing her youkulele.

Avon's new amphitheater has made it easier to host concerts in the park. Millaway says since Garrison Keillor held his 35th Anniversary show in the park in 2009, the city started to consider building a bandshell.

"Somebody basically had to come up with a plan, and then there were some community members that made some very generous donations to actually have the building built. So we now have a very nice bandshell in the community."

The Avon Area Arts plans to have three Music in the Park events this season, the first being this Thursday and then one for August 17 as well as September 21.

All Avon Music in the Park events are free to attend, food and non-alcoholic beverages will be available. If you would like to make a donation to the Avon Area Arts to help contribute to Music in the Park, click on the link below.
