An open letter to everyone leaving for college today:

Today is the day. You’ve maybe had a countdown clock going since the start of senior year waiting for today, or you may have been dreading it. Either way it’s here.

The car is loaded up. New twin size bedding is ready to be laid out in a room you will share with your new roommate. The mini fridge is ready to be filled with healthy snacks you say you will eat but really they will just end up going bad. Your shower caddy is filled with everything you’ll need for sharing a bathroom with an entire floor of people. Welcome to the next chapter of your life.

You are now in charge. You determine when to be back to the dorm at the end of the day. You decide when and what to have for meals. You make the decisions when it comes to who you spend your free time with. There is no more watchful parent eye over you, guiding you along the right path. But trust me, you got this. Some people are more ready for this than others, but you are all in the same boat of trying to figure out how to “adult”. It’s a learning curve. Give it time and it’ll all figure itself out.

I’ll leave you with this parting advice, before you leave your house, give your dog AND your family an extra hug. Crying is OK, and don’t forget a toothbrush.

- Abbey
