Amazon Making Changes in Shipping to Better the Environment

I remember when I was a kid, we would order something from a catalog, and it would take sometimes well over a month for whatever we had ordered to arrive. (how did we ever survive not having instant gratification).

There was always the risk that whatever we ordered would be damaged during the shipping, which would of course delay even more getting to use what we had ordered. 

Thankfully, there have been great advancements in how quickly we can get items, as well as how well they are packaged now.  

Bubble wrap is a favorite cushioning protectant for some companies.  

Amazon has become famous for their “air-filled pillows”, the pudgy cushions that they use to protect the precious cargo they are sending to us at a furious pace.  

Well, that’s all about to change. Amazon said last week that the pillows are about to be a thing of the past. They’ve cut 95% of the single box fillers in North America and hope to have all the filler put out to “plastic pasture” by the end of the year.  

The main reason is that Amazon was confronted with the findings of a non-profit conservation organization called “Oceana” that claimed Amazon created 208 million pounds of plastic waste in 2022 alone.  

The Morning Brew says that Amazon has been working to reduce their plastic pillow use each year, saying they will remove 15 billion air-filled pillows each year from use in their packages.  

Instead of the pudgy pillows, Amazon says they will use recycled paper to stuff into the boxes moving forward.
